A purple patch

In the spirit of purple-ness:
I've just looked up what 'purple patch' actually means - as opposed to what I thought it might mean. Google and I thought more-or-less alike:

'To have a purple patch means to have an exceptionally good period in, say, that game of football. The origin here is a little obscure but could be based on the fact that Roman noblemen wore purple togas. They were clearly exceptional people, hence the analogy. Alternatively the emphasis may be on the patch since purple and other multicoloured areas were sometimes set into ancient illuminated texts and other ventures in order to make them look more distinguished than they truly were. In Horace's De Arte Poetica he says "Often to weighty enterprises and such as profess great objects, one or two purple patches are sewn on to make a fine display in the distance".'

How educational is that? On a Saturday as well.

Also - Purple dye was ( again in Roman times ) very expensive, so "to have a purple patch" was to have some money spare!
Hope we ALL have one then eh?

What a lovely photo thingy! You are clever.

Thanks for the info. on purple patches.

All I know is purple is meant to be a spiritual colour.

My first pair of bell bottom trousers were purple, I loved them. Showing my age again!

To get a true purple until the method was mastered by Willaim perkin a research scientist who was actually looking into quinine at the time, is very difficult chemically speaking. His discoveries and research into colour led to teh expansion of colour in victorian dress and furnishings. Sadly they fade with tiem hence we all think of victorian colour being drab wheras in fact they were quite psycodelic.

The Romans used a dye made from a eastern medditeranian shell fish I think abelone but won't swear to it. Quite rare needed a lot to make a decent dye therefore purple equalled wealth...which is why we still assocaite purple with royalty and opulance.

    Glad you've enjoyed it.

Re 'How to do it?'- I'd just say click on the little 'slide' tab at the bottom RHS of the display and follow your noses. However, just north of here jackofall goes into very helpful detail. Follow his advice on 'Slideshow tutorial'. Such excellent instructions from him show what a lousy teacher I'd make.

Coming upon this long after most of you are dreaming lovely visions that may include purple imaging, I do want to say (not for the first time) how generous a group we are.
So much information and all sorts of other support is shared daily.
This is an amazing creation that still evolved.
Congrats to all who made it happen, and keep it going strongly.
    xo
