An ornathological question for you all: why do I keep hearing an owl hooting in the daytime? For the past week or so I keep hearing one in the garden. Would it be a baby, or is it actually quite common to hear them in the day? I love owls, and am used to hearing them constantly at night, but it's surprisingly eerie in the daylight!

Aha umm perhasp little they come during the day and I used to see them often sitting on posts in the countryside. Or and now this is not as daft as it seems, could it be a wood pigeon they can sound simular belive me !

Just be grateful you are not an north american indian as some tribes believed that the owl was the bringer of death and if you heard it calling you you were for the chop.. so what ever it is don't answer ok!!

Rule of thumb - although whose thumb I don't know - you should never see, or hear an owl in daylight - if you see an owl in daylight it is usually sick . . . if you have been hearing one for a week that is very odd. Is it trapped somewhere. Although would have tought if it was it would have died by now!!!!

I was going to say is it a pigeon? I got very excited at the last house convinced we were over-run with diurnal owls but it was pigeons - and no, I didn't die!

Ah ha! You should count yourself lucky. What you have very possibly heard is the lesser known Slightly-Backward Lwo, a distant relative of the owl through a midnight mishap with a bemused cuckoo some centuries ago.

Rarely seen at night, but often heard due to its loud snoring, the lwo flutters round during daylight hours asking plaintively where everyone is. Naturally, a somewhat solitary creature, and prone to avian fits of depression. The cry is normally heard as "whosatwit, whosatwit".

Hmm, I would swear it was an owl. We do have a lot of pigeons here too, but it's that distinctive long call that a tawny owl makes. I'll have to go investigating in the woodland - if I don't come back, get Mousie to set up a crime scene!

My post clashed with Jackofall's - I'll be looking for the Lwo, then!

Right I had better avoid going out into the garden in case I hear a bird wearing shoes and talking to Betty then. Don't think any live locally.

Its a little owl I guess - you sometimes hear them in the day time in Suffolk - it might be calling its baby to feed. Probably sitting on a fence post of low tree branch - see if you can track her down.

British owls talk about shoes???? That's it, I'm moving over there! My first thought was that it is a dove or a pigeon. We have some band tailed pigeons here that sound remarkably like owls.
