KEEPING CHICKENS

I must admit I knew nothing about the keeping of chickens. My son-in-law told me that where he is employed, the proprietor of large fishing lakes, and holiday cottages, keeps chickens. One Cockrell, and ten Hens, who all have names, the Cockrell, being named BRAINS. He is a thoughtful type, because he makes sure the Hens all tuck into their food first, and if a Rat is seen prowling about, the Cockrell spreads his wings around the Hens, so that the Rat cannot get near the food.

That makes sense, as we know there are rats around our coop, but we never have problems - must be the cockerel.

A good cockerel will also do the same kind of clucking a hen does to call her chicks to food, not just for food but if he finds a good nesting place. Both Mother hen and cockerel will emit a long, low cry if a potential preditor appears, at which all the chicks freeze and crouch. The loud clucking the hen does when she has layed is to tell the cockerel 'she's free' and up for it (as does the redness of her comb)

My old cockerel looked after my hens too . . . . they all seemed very content in their heirachy! it is amazing all the different calls that a hen can make. And then again there is the behaviour of the different breeds of hens. I am thinking of getting more ISA Browns as Mr Fox hasn't been around for weeks.

    Aaaahhhhhh to the picture.
